Step 1: Be proactive; protect your health (&amp; your family) first.  Invest in filtration at point of use and re-useable bottles—at home and at work.  Carbon filtration is inexpensive and effective.  (Tip: write the date on the filters w/ a Sharpie and change them every year.)

For testing at the tap, there are inexpensive test kits on the market to test for pH, chlorine, copper, lead, and basic items.  But to get beyond the municipal reports and test at the tap, you need to know what you are looking for up front.
